FDA Recall Alerts for July 2013

The FDA has issued the following recalls:

1. Gold Star Smoked Fish Corp., located at 570 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY 11231, is recalling Rybacka Wies Brand Herring Fillets In Oiii”Matjes Sledz w oleju” due to contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy persons may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled product is packaged in 17.64oz/500 grams plastic containers and has an expiration date of 10/31/13 stamped on the back of the container. The UPC Number is 021 143241228. The product was sold nationwide. It is a product of the USA.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. Consumers who purchased Rybacka Wies Brand Herring Fillets in Oil/”Matjes Sledz w oleju” should not consume it and should return it to the place of purchase. 2. Zip International Group LLC Recalls Herring Fillet in Oil Due to Health Risk and possible listeria contamination.

The recalled herring fillet in oil (FOSFOREL, ATLANTIKA) 400 gram in plastic packaging includes best by dates 05/15/2013 and 7/17/2013 (UPC: 4607095500208). The best by date is located on the round side of the packaging and was sold to retail grocery stores in New York State beginning on 03/15/2013 and ending on 5/24/2013. It is a product of Russia.

The recall was initiated after routine sampling by New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets Food Inspectors and subsequent analysis of the product by Food Laboratory personnel found the product to be positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. Consumers who have purchased herring fillet in oil (FOSFOREL, ATLANTIKA) should not consume it, but should return it to the place of purchase. 3. Olam Tomato Processors, Inc. Announces Voluntary Recall of Mild and Medium Chunky Salsa Because It May Contain Large Glass Pieces.

¬†Olam Tomato Processors, Inc., today announced the voluntary recall of three production codes of Chunky Salsa because it may contain large glass pieces. The production codes for the Mild Chunky Salsa (UPC 3927759137) are L12142 (Best By Date June 2015) and L04093 (Best By Date October 2015) and for the Medium Chunky Salsa (UPC 3927759139) is L01313 (Best By Date July 2015). The labels of the affected product will say distributed by Greenbrier International, Inc. Pictures of the affected product appear at the end of this press release. This product was sold at Dollar Tree and Deals ‘stores, Dollar Express and Dollar Bill$.

The voluntary recall is limited to these three lots of production, which were distributed nationwide. No other production dates, sizes or varieties of Chunky Salsa products are affected by this recall. This voluntary action is being taken after reports by a total of three consumers that glass had been found in the product. No injuries have been reported. This recall is being undertaken in cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration and the California Department of Public Health.

Due to the popularity of the product and proactive measures that have been taken, it is believed that no product remains in retail distribution. For this reason, consumers are asked to examine their refrigerator and pantry for specific packages of Mild Chunky Salsa, UPC 3927759137, production codes L12142 (Best By Date June 2015) and L04093 (Best By Date October 2015) and Medium Chunky Salsa, UPC 3927759139, production code L01313 (Best By Date July 2015). To locate the production code, consumers should look on the glass jar itself below the cap and above the label. Pictures of product bearing the affected lot codes appear at the end of this press release.

Consumers who may have purchased the recalled Chunky Salsa should not consume the product, but instead should return it to the store for a full refund.
