For the upcoming new year, General Mills has advocated that it will market products that are free from genetically modified (GM) ingredients. In its public announcement the company specified that it had been manufacturing its original-flavor Cheerios without GMOs for the past several weeks but declined to mention when it will implement the product in stores.
The product label will specify that orignal cheerios are not “made with genetically modified ingredients”, although trace amounts of GMO ingredients could still be present due to the contamination of the manufacturing process and will be listed on the box. Other cheerio products are currently not impacted.
General Mills already produces and markets GMO free products to the European market in response to strict labeling laws and consumer demands. The response to the U.S. consumer market is due to increasing awareness, public pressure and concern with regard to genetically modified products.
