Vitamin C improves cardiovascular benefits as much as excercise

A new study presented at the 14th International Conference on Endothelin: Physiology, Pathophysiology and Therapeutics has specifically indicated that vitamin C supplements have similar cardiovascular benefits as regular exercise in obese individuals.

Overweight individuals have increased activity of the small vessel-constricting called endothelin (ET-1). Excercise reduces E-T-1 activity but a daily exercise regiment may be challenging for many individuals.

Endothelin (ET-1) is a 21 amino acid peptide that is produced by the vascular endothelium from a 39 amino acid precursor, big ET-1, through the actions of an endothelin converting enzyme (ECE) found on the endothelial cell membrane

Daily supplementation with vitamin C (500 mg/day, time-released) reduced ET-1-related vessel constriction and the researchers found that it had the same impact as exercise.

The scientists recommend vitamin C supplementation as an effective lifestyle intervention strategy to decrease cardiovascular disease.
