Russian President Putin has put down a proverbial hoof and denounced genetically modified food organisms (GMOs). The president was very firm in advocating that citizens need protection from the use of foods derived from genetically modified organisms within the World Trade Organization (WTO), framework.
“We need to properly build our work so that it is not contrary to our obligations under the WTO. But even with this in mind, we have nevertheless legitimate methods and instruments to protect its own market, and above all citizens,” – Putin announced at a meeting with members of the Board of the Federation Council.
Putin was adamant in stressing that the Russian market and its citizens needs to be protected from substandard products and from the unknown health effects of GMO food.
“We can do it, should do and will do. We must act carefully to avoid prejudice to our obligations under the WTO, but it can be done” said Putin.
