Senator Barbara Boxer from California and Congressman Peter DeFazio from Oregon will introduce new Federal legislation that would mandate the labeling of all GE food.
The Senators in March of 2012 actively campaigned the FDA to require mandatory labeling of food products, by sending a petition signed by an overwhelming majority of the senate to the FDA. The letter can be accessed here.
Sixty-four countries have mandatory labeling policies for GE foods including South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, Brazil, China, South Africa, Australia, the European Union, and many others. The U.S. is one of the only developed countries in the world that doesn’t require labeling, despite overwhelming consumer demand.
